They did it. What a wonderful day for America and the world.

Today, I’m going to believe in the American dream, the hope and ideals that its people genuinely believe in.

The solemn tone that Obama had for his acceptance speech indicates that he’s a man who recognises the importance of the moment and the task he has ahead of him. More than a catchphrase, Americans can truly believe in ‘Yes we can’.

Even Tim Robbins is victim to some of the dodgy efforts to disenfranchise voters. He turned up to vote only to discover his name wasn’t on the register. He understandably got annoyed as he’s been voting at the same polling place for over a decade.

Via Gawker, TMZ has the video after Tim went to the Board of Election office and filled an affidavat ballot. According to CNN this has happened to a few other people who filled in provisional ballots.

I say if you’re stupid enough to fall for that, you probably shouldn’t vote.

We decided to have a last minute election party. Since we’re doing this in a part of the world where we’re going to have to stay up all night, we’ve gone for a selection of snacky foods from Obama related countries.

Small Hawaiian pizzas – obvious, but without the ham since we’ve got a kosher/muslim mix of guests.

Fries – though we kind of ruined this by making chip butties.

Indonesian Cucumber Salad – pretty yum. cucumber, onion, sambal olek, sugar, lime juice, salt and pepper. in the fridge for an hour and ready with a dish with a kick.

Kenyan coconut grilled pineapple

and of course :

Kansas Apple Pie and ice-cream

I refuse to believe the pointless polls or believe that Obama’s already got the majority of electoral votes. Until its announced and McCain concedes I’m going to be stressed out and comfort eating my way to an Obama presidency.

Even in the early days when I was wavering between Hilary and Barack during the primaries, I knew that I wanted Michelle Obama to be first lady.

Though she’s had to play it safe after her early candid remarks began to be used against her, she’s still all kinds of awesome. Anyone she chose to be with couldn’t be bad.

Alison Samuels in Newsweek sums up why Michelle has been able to highlight a model of African American women not normally seen by the American public.

Usually, the lives of black women go largely unexamined. The prevailing theory seems to be that we’re all hot-tempered single mothers who can’t keep a man and, according to CNN’s “Black in America,” documentary, those of us who aren’t street-walking crack addicts are on the verge of dying from AIDS. As writer Rebecca Walker put it on her Facebook page: “CNN should call me next time they really want to show diversity and meet real black women that nobody seems to talk about.”

Like Walker, I too know more than my share of black women who have little in common with the black female images I see in the media. My “sistafriends” are mostly college educated, in healthy, productive relationships and have a major aversion to sassy one-liners. They are teachers, doctors and business owners. Of course, there are those of us who never get the chance to pull it together. And we accept and embrace them—but their stories can’t and shouldn’t be the only ones told.

Yet pop culture continues to hold a very unevolved view of African-American women. Take HBO’s new vampire saga “True Blood.” Even in the world of make-believe, black women still can’t escape the stereotype of being neck-swirling, eye-rolling, oversexed females raised by our never-married, alcoholic mothers. Where is Claire Huxtable when you need her?

Why? All because the BBC doesn’t have the balls to tell its critics where to get off. These were people who were jealous and hated Ross for earning loads of money, Russell for shagging vast numbers of women and also clearly having fun, and a determination to bring down the BBC for just being there.

Its comedy! Sometimes it goes wrong. I would rather have occasional almighty cock ups from Russell Brand who pushes his shows to the limit and delivers, than listen to a safe pair of hands who never aspire beyond mediocrity.

The stream of conciousness meanderings, surreal riffs and moments of real honesty both emotional and gossipy made Russell a genius broadcaster – he even beat Chris Evans at his peak because Russell seems genuinely charming and surrounded by strong friendships.

The BBC needs to grow a pair and be willing to fight for their staff and presenters when the criticism is clearly just a cooked up witch-hunt.

The BBC has let its license fee payers down because we’re the only ones who lose from the loss of Brand and Ross.

I agree with Noel Gallagher, its Us and Them and we need to make sure they don’t win.

Write or call the BBC and let them know – I believe that there more than 27,000 people who would want the Russell Brand Show to come back and at the very least should let the BBC know that they are angry for allowing this to happen.
